Summary

  • Editorial
  • Fire safety at the Sanomatalo building, Risto K. Järvinen
  • One of the special architectural features of the Sanomatalo building is the double-wall facade. This means that a lift platform can rescue people from balconies, but not windows. This complex facade, which comprises numerous criss-cross struts and cantilevers, also makes the balconies difficult to reach. A rescue vehicle has to be in exactly the right place, to an accuracy of millimetres, if the attempt is to succeed. Places for the tyres ought to be marked on the ground.

  • Red fire engines over the decades, Jarmo Sirola
  • Half a century of extinguishing equipment, Ari Santavuori
  • Additions to the type approval list that affect the fire sector
  • Major fires in terms of insurance company statistics, Seppo Pekurinen
  • Tillägg rörande brandsektorn i förteckningen över typgodkännanden
  • A new standard for safety lighting
  • Fire safety in buildings and amendments to regulations, Antti Lastu
  • Towards a new safety culture, Jouko Suokas
  • Cover: The Sanomatalo building, which was completed a little over a year ago in the heart of Helsinki for Sanoma Corporation, is a modern, hi-tech structure with respect to architecture, frame and facade. But what about fire safety? Photo: Risto K. Järvinen
