According to Rang, Sweden intends to put an end to the inspection rounds made by fire inspectors checking the condition of fire doors or the prominent display of ‘exit’ signs. In future, fire inspectors will communicate directly with corporate management, i.e. ask the manager about the company’s current or intended fire safety arrangements.

Seventy-seven people lost their lives in fires in Finland last year. This is an improvement on 2000, when the death toll was 85, and 1999, when fire victims numbered 95. The Finnish Central Organization for Rescue Services thinks the favourable trend is due to statutory fire alarms and the obligation to keep them in working order.
